This is a romantic idea that you hear a lot: “I’m going to quit my job to travel!”. It’s an act of rebellion and it’s the perfect summary of the western millennial’s psyche: “I’m going to quit my meaningless bullshit job to find myself through authentic experiences and bla bla bla …” – deep stuff. A lot of us think about it and plot it at night like some kind of revenge but what takes us from the liberating exercise of making absurd plans to actually doing it?
For us it was the sense that there is a window of opportunity that closes and that only reopens later in life when our hypothetical kids are in college and our backs hurt even more from endless hours of sitting and looking our laptops.
It was also a moment where the stars aligned – a natural transition in our careers, family that could use our apartment in Porto… And when the stars align, the question is really not “why” but “why not” – we couldn’t find a great answer to that question.
To be completely honest, here’s how it really happened: two good friends told us they were doing it (thank you!) and after 5 minutes of deep thinking we decided “we are doing it too!”
We are lucky! Now is the time: we have the energy, enough savings and a restless mind that devours experiences like freshly baked “pão de queijo”!
