As you might have realised by now – we love eating. One of our favourite activities while on the road is to experience local culture through food. If I wanted to describe to you our perfect day it would undoubtedly include hopping from eatery to restaurant to bar and ordering the local’s favourite to share. Probably it would also include a lot of waiting in line, checking google maps and finding our way through some rough neighbourhoods – but that’s part of the fun.
So what type of food/restaurant do we like? We like the greasy, cheesy, meaty sandwich that locals line up for in that eatery where deciding what to order is super obvious. We like the busy and loud 75-year-old restaurant that has always been there serving cold beer with delicious spicy snacks. And we also like walking into the fanciest restaurant in town with a confident look on our faces and ordering that award-winning dessert with two spoons. “Do you want a drink or coffee to go with it? – No, just the dessert, thanks!”
Choosing where we’re going to spend our valuable eating budget is one of our most important travelling decisions – and we take it seriously. A lot of our time goes into planning and researching in a combination of travel guides, Instagram pages, TikToks, blogs, youtube videos, google maps and local magazines. When a particular place starts popping up in different lists we know we probably found a winner. We usually don’t walk into places with no previous research – our stomach’s capacity is an asset that’s too valuable to just waste on a bad meal. But now that we are travelling for 8 months and time is not so scarce we have started looking at things differently and find great joy in trusting our intuition – and when it’s good .. it’s great!
