Mexico City (CDMX) is taco paradise. The sent of roasted meat is everywhere and locals line up in front of hundreds of taco stands for their daily dose of this street food institution.
Make no mistake, the best taco stands don’t look fancy and don’t add sophisticated toppings to you tortilla. A good taco is great meat (beef or pork), tortilla (single or double), simple toppings (coriander, onion, ..) and that beautiful squeeze of lime.
Before diving into the best taquerias in CDMX, here’s a quick summary of the most famous types of taco you can find in the city:
- Taco de suadero: CDMX’s biggest classic. Suadero is a beef cut (between the belly and the leg)
- Taco al pastor: one of Mexico’s biggest export. Inspired by the kebab/gyros and seasoned with pineapple.
- Taco de canasta: pre-prepared tacos filled with meat or beans that are served from a big warm basket
- Taco de cabeza (head taco): only for the brave – tacos filled with different part of the cow’s head. You can choose cheek, eyes, .. etc
